Article from the Grimsby Telegraph.

RUSSELL'S GLORIOUS NOISE DAZZLES THE CROWD

SINGING sensation Russell Watson thrilled the crowd with a stirring performance at Cleethorpes's Meridian Park on Saturday.

The Salford-born opera singer treated the audience to a mixture of classical arias and Neapolitan love songs before closing the concert with a rousing rendition of

Last Night Of The Prom favourites Land Of Hope And Glory and Jerusalem.

The event, called That Glorious Noise, was one of a series of four concerts being held around the country in aid of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.

And before taking to the stage, Russell told the Grimsby Telegraph why he was so keen to support the charity.

He said: "The work charities like this do to support victims and their families is crucial.

"Most of the people who suffer with muscular dystrophy are young boys who have a short life expectancy and for a parent to have to experience that must be incredibly difficult."

Former factory worker Russell, who shot to fame in 1999, said he received lots of requests to perform at charity concerts - partly, he believes, because of his fight against a brain tumour in 2007.

He said: "People relate me to illness in certain respects because of the brain tumour that I had.

"I get a lot of people that come up to me in the street who say they were ill or their mother was ill and that hearing about my illness had been a big help."

Russell, who has just recorded his latest studio album with Ennio Morricone's orchestra in Rome, said he was enjoying performing more than ever

"I'm much more grateful to be here than I was before. I feel fortunate not only to be singing, but to still be here."

The audience at Meridian Park were certainly grateful that Russell had made the trip to Cleethorpes, as they greeted his arrival on stage with warm applause.

On a gloriously sunny, but chilly, summer's evening, Russell opened with the lively O Sole Mio, more commonly known as the "Just One Cornetto" song, before striking a pose on stage

as he jokingly invited members of the audience to snap him with their cameras.

Accompanied by the Orchestra d'Amici, conducted by William Hayward, Russell was in fine form and his boyish charm was going down a storm with the appreciative audience.

At the opening of Parla Piu Piano, the theme tune to The Godfather, one woman stood and broke into a spontaneous round of applause, with a look of wonder in her eyes.

FANS SING RUSSELL'S PRAISES
Russell Watson at the Hartlepool Borough Hall performance.
 Pictures by Chris Armstrong
A world-renowned opera singer wowed an audience of hundreds when he performed in Hartlepool.
Tenor Russell Watson delivered a stunning performance to 850 adoring fans at Hartlepool’s Borough Hall on Saturday night.

The much-anticipated concert was staged by Hartlepool Male Voice Choir and chairman Duncan Graham described it as “absolutely brilliant”.
Their celebrity guest, who has sold millions of records worldwide, sang alone and with the 60-strong choir to the Latin number Panis Angelicus
and Italian operatic Funiculi Funicula as well as Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley.

Mr Graham said: “He was absolutely charming and what a voice he has got.
“It was an absolutely terrific concert. I’m still on a high after it. He really enjoyed it and he went down a storm.”
The choir performed for half an hour singing hits including Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and Robbie Williams’ Angels, Amazing Grace and The Wind Beneath My Wings.

Then Russell, who is known as The Voice, performed a 25-minute set in the first half, before returning to the stage later on for another 25 minute stint later in the night.
He also sang an operatic version of O Sole Mio and well-known Arrivederci Roma.
The audience showed their appreciation by joining in to Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem.

Mr Graham added: “He got everybody going. He sang Volare and everybody joined in.”
Hartlepool Male Voice Choir staged their first celebrity concert with Songs of Praise presenter Aled Jones last year to mark their golden anniversary.
Tickets for this year’s concert sold out in 10 days.
Mr Graham paid thanks to the choir’s musical director, David Gibson, and Mick Waller who actually made an appearance on stage as Dolly when they sang Hello Dolly

It will be hosted by former Doctor Who actor, Colin Baker, with musical accompaniment provided by The Sound Power Orchestra. Other special guests include Brit Award nominee and protégé of Gary Barlow, Camilla Kerslake.

HAPPY RUSSELL'S BACK IN TUNE WITH LIFE AND LOVE

Sunday April 11,2010

HAVING successfully fought two brain tumours there’s no doubt that Russell Watson has been to hell and back in recent years but you’d never know it from meeting him now.

Sitting in his west London hotel room, brimming with excitement about his starring role in Kristina, the new musical from Abba’s Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, the tenor

is the picture of rude health.

He’s also loved-up, admitting exclusively that he’s in his first relationship for almost fi ve years.

Russell is just back from lunch at Marco Pierre White restaurant the Belvedere and halfway through getting changed when I arrive, meaning he’s sitting in a smart black shirt and
jumper teamed with such a small pair of blue shorts that I’m not sure where to look. “That’s really bad, isn’t it?” he asks, nodding towards the shorts.

“You don’t mind, do you?” Well, at least they emphasise that Russell, 43, is looking toned and fi t. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2006 and, although it was removed, it returned a year later,
demanding a second life-threatening operation and radiotherapy. “That was hell,” he says. Neither he nor his loved ones dared to believe he’d pull through, to see the day
he’d star in Kristina at the Royal Albert Hall.

With its impeccable songwriting credentials, Kristina is guaranteed to be a hit, although it sounds rather more challenging than Mamma Mia!.

It’s a three-hour symphonic opera telling the story of a Swedish family’s emigration to America in search of a better life.

Ulvaeus and Andersson organised workshops across the US to find their perfect leading man, Karl-Oskar.

They failed, so Watson received a call from a record company contact who arranged for him to fl y to Stockholm
for an informal audition.

In Benny’s studio, Watson sang along to a tune from the opera The Elixir Of Love and when he hit the top note of
the required two-octave range, Benny started laughing with delight. “He looked round and said, ‘Wow!’ ” saysRussell. First Björn was summoned to the

studio, then their leading lady Helen Sjöholm. Five minutes after they sang a duet, Russell was offered the part outright.

For Russell, it was a hard-won reward for two years spent tirelessly “reconstructing” his voice, moving way
beyond the point where hitting top notes made him feel faint and dizzy. Now, though? “My voice isn’t as good as it was,” he says, “it’s better.” Russell describes Kristina as being

about “love and family and devotion and commitment and death”, themes that struck such a personal chord during the musical’s Carnegie Hall debut last September that he broke

down in tears. “I’m holding my wife in my arms as she’s dying and the music just got me. It was like a tidal wave of emotion that cracked me,” he says.

After the show, Russell was walking through the Carnegie Hall lobby when a stranger stopped him in his tracks.
“She said, ‘Oh my Garrd! Are you Karl-Oskar? That performance was just amazing! Those tears! They just seemed so real!’ I thought, ‘Er, they were...’ ‘My Garrd, I love your voice,

you’re totally amazing, I’m going to stalk you!’ Then all of a sudden my eyes doubled in size because I realised,
‘Holy ****! It’s Meryl Streep!’ ”

Watson’s 13-year marriage to Helen ended in 2001, though he’s almost inseparable from his daughters Rebecca, 15, and Hannah, nine. He then split from Roxanne, his American girlfriend
of four years, almost five years ago. Since then, his health has taken precedence over his love life. “I’ve come through that tunnel,” he says. “My focus is now on being happy.”

As it happens, life is very much looking up on that score. “Just a few weeks ago I met a very pleasant
lady,” he says coyly, explaining that they met in a restaurant near his Cheshire home.

So he started chatting to a stranger in a restaurant? “That’s how it generally happens, isn’t it?” he says, laughing but refusing to tell me what she does, simply saying: “She’s lovely.

“I’m surprised I mentioned her,” he adds ruefully, “but I haven’t had a proper relationship in years. It’s because I’m feeling better.”

At the same time, his career is almost taking care of itself. He has signed a generous deal with Sony to release an autumn album, to be recorded in Rome with Ennio Morricone’s orchestra.

He’s playing an outdoor concert practically every weekend this summer.

He is even in talks with the BBC, pitching a TV series summarised as “classical music for dummies”.

“It just feels good to be alive and still doing what I love and what I was born to do. Everything is so much more meaningful when you’ve nearly died.”

LIVE MUSIC : RUSSELL WATSON and CAMILLA KERSLAKE FOR CLASSICAL CONCERT

TWO of world’s top singers are to perform an open-air classical concert at Sandringham Estate.

Russell Watson – affectionately known as The Voice – is confirmed to perform strictly classical for Sandringham’s Last Night of the Proms on Sunday, August 8.

It follows the recent announcement that Will Young is to become the first non-classical music star to perform at HM The Queen’s Sandringham Estate.

Russell, who will be joined by Camilla Kerslake, first rose to prominence in 1999 singing the anthems at several, exceptionally high profile, sporting events – including at

Wembley and the UEFA Champions League Final between Man Utd and Bayern Munich.

He shot to fame in a relatively short timeframe, with his 2001 debut album The Voice, a mixture of operatic arias and pop covers, reaching number five in the UK album chart.

Having started out humbly performing working men’s clubs, Watson has since gone on to become multi-platinum selling star making him the UK’s biggest-selling tenor.

The operatic sensation will be joined live on stage by highly-talented Classical Brit Award nominee and fellow classical crossover star, Camilla Kerslake.

The pair will be supported on the night by the National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by William Hayward

Tickets for on sale today. For more information visit www.ticketeast.co.uk, or call 0871 224 1112.

Russell Watson to put on spectacular show at Woburn Abbey

Local Russell Watson fans are in for a treat as the award-winning singer has signed up to headline at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire on 24 July to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign following illness that took him

from the music scene for many months.

Now fully fit to perform again, the multi-platinum selling singer had taken time away from the spotlight after being diagnosed with a brain tumour. As part of his come-back tour, he has agreed to perform at the special concert in aid

of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign set to take place this summer.

The picnic style concerts is named ‘That Glorious Noise’ and will feature compare Colin Baker, further special guests to be announced and music will be provided by The Sound Power Orchestra.

Talking about the concert, international singing star Russell Watson said:
“It’s an absolute delight just to be back on the stage, so the fact that I’m singing at this great venue and that I’m doing it for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign makes it even more special. I hope that music lovers from all across the

area will come and enjoy a glorious summer’s evening of musical entertainment.”

Russell Watson adds Summer 2010 UK dates - tickets on sale now

Two-and-a-half years ago, Salford-born tenor Russell Watson was in intensive care in hospital fighting for his life following emergency surgery to remove a recurrent

brain tumour.

After a lengthy and gradual recovery, the man with not a jot of classical training returned to the studio and resumed his career.

Watson continues to enjoy huge popular appeal despite occasional but persistent criticism of his lack of training and claims that his voice is not of operatic standard.

Nonetheless , the Lancastrian has sold in excess of five million albums suggesting that the music-buying public think rather more of Watson than the odd critic does.

Now, a decade or so after his breakthrough performance at an Old Trafford fixture between Manchester United and Spurs, and fighting fit, the man known as The Voice is adding

some high profile summer dates.

After his St George's Day date in Jersey and the shows at Harewood House, Leeds and Meridian Park, Cleethorpes, Watson has three more UK dates.

Two additional July gigs are scheduled for the iconic locations of Woburn Abbey and Beaulieu National Motor Museum and the new dates conclude with a

(possibly?) royal performance at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk in August.

RUSSELL WATSON set for SANDRINGHAM PROMS

Published Date: 30 March2010

RUSSELL Watson - affectionately known as 'The Voice' - is confirmed to perform strictly classical for the last night of twin open-air concerts in Sandringham's Last Night of the Proms.
Following the recent announcement that Will Young is to become the first non-classical music star to perform at The Queen's Sandringham Estate, it has been announced that Watson
will perform the night after, along with Classical BRIT Nominee and fellow classical crossover star, Camilla Kerslake.

Watson first rose to prominence in 1999 singing the anthems at several, exceptionally high profile, sporting events.
His 2001 debut album The Voice, a mixture of operatic arias and pop covers, reached number one in the UK Classical Chart and number five in the UK Album Chart.

Watson then made history as the first British artist to ever hold the number one classical position on both sides of the Atlantic.
Kerslake, meanwhile, initially gained recognition as the first signing to Take That star Gary Barlow's new record label when her debut album reached number four in the UK Classical Chart in 2009.
The pair will be supported on the night by the National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by William Hayward.

The exclusive concert will take place on Sunday, 8 August, with tickets on sale from Friday (March 26).
